A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
